Hatchery Technician - trū Shrimp Company

Job Summary

The Hatchery Technician is responsible for general assistance and support to all tasks involved in operating the Balaton Pilot Hatchery. This includes assisting in the preparation, execution and clean-up of areas related to algae growth, shrimp breeding, spawning and larval growth.  Help with routine maintenance of various Hatchery equipment is expected.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Assists in the setup of equipment for various process steps within the hatchery.
  • Collects and records data for processes within the hatchery while ensuring data are recorded accurately.
  • Under direct supervision, operates basic hatchery equipment and processes.
  • Supports the feeding process for larval growth and ensures appropriate amounts of the correct feed are being administered at the correct intervals.
  • Assists with basic algae growth processes as directed by the Algae Lab Technician
  • Cleans equipment after process steps are completed in compliance with biosecurity protocols.
  • Inspects equipment and identifies signs of wear and identifies replacement needs.
  • Within scope of responsibility and capability, repairs and replaces hatchery equipment parts and components.
  • Identifies opportunities for process and procedure improvements and assists management in developing and implementing best practices.
  • Ensures safety policies are integrated into all daily activities.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Education:  B.S. degree in biological science field is desired; AA degree in biological science is acceptable; high school degree is the minimum.  Ability to work in the US required.
  • Experience:  Minimum of two years of experience with hatchery work preferred.
  • General:  Satisfactorily complete introductory period per company policy.
  • Physical:  The physical requirements for this job that are characterized as used constantly or frequently are listed as follows: Finger dexterity, hearing, seeing, and sitting. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the key work duties.
  • Travel:  This position requires periodic travel to trū Shrimp facilities and non-customer sites. Due to travel requirements, a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation are required.
  • Work Environment:  Work typically takes place in a hatchery setting. This includes daily exposure to 85º Fahrenheit temperatures and ~50% humidity.

    • Ability to read, comprehend and follow detailed instructions.
    • Ability to strictly follow detailed protocols.
    • Ability to work unsupervised in a laboratory/hatchery environment.
    • Compatibility with strict biosecurity protocols.
    • Ability to keep work area meticulously clean and orderly.
    • Ability to develop and build strong professional relationships.
    • Ability to work effectively in a team setting.
