Algae Lab Technician - trū Shrimp Company

Job Summary

Responsible for all aspects of operating the Algae Lab in support of the Balaton Pilot Hatchery.  Key tasks include developing pure algae cultures and producing algae for feeding shrimp larvae; additionally, this person is responsible for hatchery operations in the absence of the manager.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Monitor and maintain pure stock algae cultures for feeding shrimp larvae.
  • Maintain high standards of hygiene and process detail to prevent contamination of stock cultures and media from microbes in the environment and from other microalgae.
  • Provide detailed recording and data entry; follow documented SOP’s for algae growth and maintenance through all stages of algae cultures.
  • Accurately and carefully transfer algae cultures from smaller to larger volumes by serial dilution.
  • Calculate correct volume of algae and transfer for use in larviculture feeding.
  • Prepare all algae growth media; perform autoclave sterilization of growth media and glassware; clean all containers where algae are grown.
  • Work with Hatchery leader (Assistant Research Scientist) to develop innovative techniques, run research tests and solve problems.
  • Responsible for larviculture and maturation duties for the Hatchery in the absence of the Hatchery leader (and with the assistance of the Assistant Technical Director).
  • Take direction and work independently.
  • Keep work space, lab area and equipment meticulously clean and orderly.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications and Skills

  • Education:  B.S. in Microbiology preferred; Biology degree with microbiology coursework is acceptable; comparable degrees considered.  Ability to work in US is required.
  • Experience:  Experience with cell culturing and aseptic techniques; good knowledge of growth dynamics of microalgae and microorganisms; proficient with Microsoft Office.
  • General:  Satisfactorily complete introductory period per company policy.
  • Physical:  The physical requirements for this job that are characterized as used constantly  or frequently are listed as follows: Finger dexterity, hearing, seeing, and sitting. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the key work duties.
  • Travel:  This position requires periodic travel to trū Shrimp facilities and non-customer sites. Due to travel requirements, a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation are required.
  • Work Environment:  Work typically takes place in a hatchery/laboratory setting. This includes daily exposure to 85º Fahrenheit temperatures and ~50% humidity.  Hatchery is a shower in/shower out facility.

    • Ability to work unsupervised in a laboratory/hatchery environment.

    • Ability to develop and build strong professional relationships.
    • Ability to work effectively in a team setting.
